Fraud & Abuse in Construction Projects

Fundamentals of Writing Expert Reports
Monday 1:40 - 3:00 p.m. / Tuesday 10:20 - 11:40 a.m.

Experts need to understand effective report writing techniques. This includes knowing the fundamentals of report writing under Federal Rule of Evidence 26a 2b, how to be precise and say exactly what you mean, and what language to include and avoid in your report. This session provides a basic report writing structure that can be applied to litigation settings, while also discussing common errors experts make in report writing and how those errors can come back to haunt you during deposition or trial.

Understanding Procurement Fraud
Monday 3:30 - 4:50 p.m. / Tuesday 1:40 - 3:00 p.m.

Learn about specific examples of procurement fraud found in governmental entities and institutions of higher learning, including violations of procurement statutes, both at federal and state levels. This session also provides tips on detecting and preventing procurement fraud for all entity types, and a discussion of the methods for uncovering fraud as a means for defending against wrongful termination litigation.

An Internal Auditor’s Approach to Fraud Prevention and Investigation
Tuesday 3:30 - 4:50 p.m. / Wednesday 8:30 - 9:50 a.m.

Gain insight into the use of ethical promotion; operation and control processes; and governance communication processes to prevent fraud. Learn and discuss the investigation process of determining how activities should be (criteria); how activities are (condition); the reason for the difference (cause); the cost to the organization (effect); and what should be done about it (recommendation). Understand the importance of good communication in both the prevention and investigation of fraud.
